Trained as a goldsmith, Jan Pauwel Gillemans specialized in still lifes, richly painting a profusion of various fruits, at times embellished with seafood and shellfish as well as ewers in silver and vermeil. The records of the famous Antwerp art dealer Guilliam Forchoudt (1608-1678), from 1665 to 1673, tell us that Gillemans regularly supplied him with still lifes and garlands of fruit for export.
A composition similar to the present work was once in the collection of Nérée tot Babberich (1).
