During their fruitful eight-year collaboration, Ferrari and Pininfarina sold over two thousand 250 GTEs and 330 GT 2+2s, attracting not just motor-racing enthusiasts but also clients who liked comfort, and the prospect of taking their two children (or some extra luggage) with them.
It was with both sets of client in mind that a new, powerful 2+2 was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1967: the first Ferrari 2+2 with independent rear suspension. Koni's combined coil springs/ shock-absorbers ensured excellent road-holding, and comfort was guaranteed by the self-levelling system in the rear, pioneered jointly by Ferrari and Koni. As with the GTB4 and 330 GTC, transmission involved the 'torque tube' system. The chassis had the same wheel-base as the 330 GT 2+2, but the bodywork was totally new, and more like Superfast models than previous 2+2s.
As historian Marcel Massini confirmed, this beautiful 365 GT 2+2, with chassis no. 13041, was produced rather late in the series. It was delivered new to the American Ferrari distributor Luigi Chinetti motor inc, based in New York. Its colour was Verde Barham, a colour of rare elegance in which only 29 examples of the 365 GT 2+2 were produced. It was still in theUS when it was purchased by its previous owner at the Monterey auction in August 2006. At the time, the car had been based in Oregon for several years and had been restored, having been repainted in a beautiful metallic grey. As noted in the sales catalogue at the time, a general mechanical overhaul was carried out by ATD (Dick Guthrie) of Portland, Oregon, who overhauled the engine, transmission, and brakes.
It was then kept for more than 15 years in Switzerland, in one of the world's largest collections, where it was not driven much. It was at an auction in St Moritz that the current owner acquired it. He had the entire car overhauled and fixed a few details such as the car radio. Unfortunately, he can now only drive cars with automatic gearboxes. Equipped with air conditioning and power steering, this is a Ferrari with classic lines that is particularly pleasant and modern to drive. Only 801 examples were produced.
