With only 1,108 examples produced and introduced in 1969, the Junior Zagato GT 1300 coupe featured a bold design that was well ahead of its time stylistically, while the Giulia’s engine ensured its sporty character. The first 200 examples were assembled with aluminium panels and this particular car is one of those. It left the factory on the 8th April 1970 and was registered on the 22nd April of the same year in Aosta, Italy.
It then remained in Italy for 10 years in the hands of its first owner before being bought by a Zagato specialist. The latter kept it for 3 years in England before selling it in France in 1983. In 2013, it was featured in the Auto Retro magazine where its previous owner (Vice President of the Alfa Classic Club at the time) detailed the significant work required for its restoration after he purchased it in 2011. A file of invoices demonstrates the work, which included a bodywork restoration prior to repainting, overhaul of the running gear, engine rebuild and tuning with lightened flywheel and sports camshafts, gearbox rebuild etc.
A 2017 inspection report described the car’s condition as “exceptional”; it was also exhibited at Retromobile in 2018 on the Alfa Classic Club stand, before being sold the same year to its current owner, having travelled 8,000 km since its restoration. Registered with the Alfa Romeo Zagato Register, this superb coupe has since remained in remarkable condition. Its discreet mechanical preparation, including “camembert” air filters and a stainless steel exhaust system, only add to the desirability of a design that has aged gracefully.
