The BMW Z8, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999, followed a concept car, the Z07, which had been presented two years previously at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of 1997. Their style played the nostalgia card, making an explicit reference to the sublime curves of the BMW 507 from 1956. The Z8 was presented in the form of a roadster with sensual lines, the work of the much discussed house designer Christopher Bangle. It is based on a chassis of the "space frame" type, composed of an aluminium trellis with extruded sections combined with sheet metal cases. Its mechanics, a staggering 5 litre V8 reaching 400 hp at 6,600 rpm and 500 Nm of torque, borrowed from the M5 saloon, took the 1,600 kg to 250 km/h and brought the time taken to get from 0 to 100 km/h to 4.7 s! The front suspension also came from the M5, while the multi-arm rear suspension was closer to that of the contemporary Series 7 saloon. Six-speed manual transmission transferred the power to the rear wheels. The passenger compartment also played on nostalgia, with a dashboard made of composite material painted the same colour as the bodywork, as in the 1950s.This dragster of the road, of which 5,703 units were produced between 2000 and 2003, is a rare and fascinating machine that marked the beginning of the third millennium.
This particular car has an extraordinary history. It was originally ordered by an Ethiopian businessman who became a Saudi citizen and was ranked among the top fifty richest people in the world. Living between London and Saudi Arabia, this Z8 was ordered new in Geneva and delivered by Emil Frey Sa Geneva in August 2001 to serve as his leisure car during his visits to the Swiss capital. It was stored in a heated garage and was regularly restarted to be ready for use, but his schedule never allowed him the opportunity to drive the car, which consequently never went out.
It was later sold at an auction in 2017 to a collector who sold it in 2021 to the current owner. As a professional in automotive, the latter was stunned by the car’s “as new” condition and made sure to preserve it like a sculpture. Finished in metallic Titanium grey, all black Nappa leather interior and a black hood, the car is in a great almost-new condition. It was carefully stored throughout its life and the interior appears to have never been used. It is sold with its duplicate keys in its leather case, its multiple booklets, including the GPS CD and its Service Heft (service logbook stamped only by Emil Frey during the pre-delivery inspection). With a mileage of only 30 kilometres, this is a unique opportunity to take a step back in time by more than two decades and take delivery of a brand-new BMW Z8.
