Amilcar made a name for itself with its very first model, the successful cyclecar called the CC. Its sporting evolutions – the CCS, followed by the CGS – led to the CGSS, which stands for Cyclecar Grand Sport Surbaisse. While the CGS and CGSS shared the same chassis, the wheelbase of the lowered (“Surbaisse”) version was 10cm shorter and fitted with different rear springs. The front axle was also lowered and equipped with larger-diameter brakes.
This particular example was acquired by the father of its current owner in 1983 as a project car and has been in the process of being restored. This car features the characteristics of the CGSS: 2.32 m wheelbase, 26 cm diameter brake and flat-steel brake rods. The bodywork was rebuilt in steel over a wooden structure, as it should be. The aluminum bonnet seems to be original and the canopy is a more recent casting.
The engine has no serial number and its type remains to be identified. The gearbox and axle are included, as well as the dashboard supports. To conclude, all essential elements are there to bring back to life one of Amilcar’s most desirable models.
Please note that this vehicle is an assembly of Amilcar parts from various models and does not have a chassis number.
