Since the 1960s, Excalibur has embodied the revival of the flamboyant automotive styling of the 1920s. Inspired by the legendary Mercedes-Benz SSK, their creations combine evocative pre-war aesthetics with dependable American mechanicals. Among its most iconic models, the 1981 Series IV Phaeton stands as a spectacular expression of Excalibur’s vision.

This impressive four-seat convertible captivates with its majestic proportions and abundant chrome detailing. Its extraordinarily long bonnet, separate flowing wings and side-mounted exhausts evoke the grandeur of the great pre-war touring cars.

Powered by a 5.0-litre Chevrolet V8, it offers smooth and comfortable drive. Rare today, and viewed in the context of the 1980s, it could be seen as a symbol of American automotive luxury and exuberance.

The current owner of this Excalibur, a French architect living in the United States at the time, purchased the car new in 1981. Based in New York during the early 1980s, he was immediately drawn to the model’s extravagant style. When he returned to France in 1992 to settle in the prestigious seaside community of Port-la-Galère, he brought the Excalibur with him and used sparingly.

The car is now offered following extensive recent mechanical recommissioning. The braking system has been completely overhauled, while the radiator, cooling system and carburation have all been refurbished. Fluid and filter changes, have been carried out by a highly respected specialist in the South of France.

A motor car of truly breathtaking presence, this Excalibur perfectly captures the spirit of an era when style, confidence and panache were celebrated without restraint.
