Launched in 1965, the first Electra Glide is one of the best-known models in Harley-Davidson’s history. It owed its name to its electric starter, fitted for the first time to one of the company’s bikes. At the time, it should be said, all the Japanese bikes had these, and they had become essential to start the big 1200cc pushrod twin. The electric starter came with a more powerful 12-volt electrical system and a larger battery. Otherwise, the model remained true to the company’s philosophy, which favoured luxury and touring over sportiness and didn’t skimp on chrome and lavish trim.

This Electra Glide was bought in Uruguay and came from the Presidential Guard of the country’s president, Jorge Pacheco. It still has the blue and red lights of the police at the front, as well a large windshield, a deep twin saddle and two large panniers protected by a metal frame. “I used it a lot with the Harley-Davidson club in Uruguay”, Paul-Émile B recounted, “before bringing it back to France, where I used it regularly. It’s comfortable and nice to ride.” Unlike the very first Electra Glides in 1965, fitted with the ‘Panhead’ engine, this model has the ‘Shovelhead’, which is more efficient and slightly more powerful than its predecessor. In well-preserved condition with its blue paintwork, this bike is a fine example of this legendary model.
