Ce dessin, exécuté vers 1580/90, est une reprise d’une composition de Federico Zuccaro connue par un dessin très similaire conservé au Metropolitan Museum de New York (op. cit., fig.1). Trometta et Federico furent tous les deux assistants de Taddeo, et il est probable qu’ils collaborèrent également sur les travaux de Federico. Federico Zuccaro dessina plusieurs feuilles sur ce thème, sans que l’on connaisse de tableau final. Il reprit l’idée de sa composition qu’il élargit pour un grand retable peint en 1603 à Sant’Angelo in Vado (op. cit., fig. 2). Notre dessin, très fini, a l’apparence d’un modello (destiné à un commanditaire éventuel) ou d’un ricordo.
